In 2010, one of the world's most challenging construction projects and certainly the most expensive (S$8 billion) stand-alone integrated resort property ever built is officially open in Singapore. This presentation discusses the acoustics design issues for this project and how they are resolved. It also discusses some nontechnical issues involved in this large scale and fast track project, which have to be addressed in order to achieve the technical design targets.

In buildings, flanking transmission via the structure is omnipresent and forms of statistical energy analysis are commonly used to model the structure. The effects of flanking transmission are not confined to any particular part of the building acoustics frequency range and it is not uncommon for the flanking structure to radiate similar or higher sound power levels than the separating wall or floor itself. To predict this requires models or measurements that can quantify the coupling across the complex types of plate junctions that occur in real buildings. Whilst these can be measured with laboratory or field measurements using experimental forms of SEA there are a number of complications:
(1) it is awkward to construct a test structure so that all unwanted flanking paths are suppressed,
(2) in the low-frequency range there are issues with low modal density and low modal overlap, and
(3) in the mid- and high-frequency ranges, the plate junction is simply treated as a ‘black box’ upon which there is an incident bending wave field on the source plate that results in a transmitted bending wave field on the receiving plate. The process of wave conversion is hidden within this ‘black box’ and it is often assumed that it can be ignored, or does not take place.
